Description:
Calcium:
Calcium is the most abundant in the human body. Calcium was isolated in 1808 by Sir Humphry Davy. Calcium is called “the king of the minerals,” which is basic to good health. About 99% of the calcium found in the bones and teeth and remaining 1% is found throughout the body in blood, muscle, and other soft tissues (such as the nerves, organs, etc.) Calcium is required for the formation and maintenance of healthy bones and teeth. Calcium is also required for normal heartbeat, normal blood clothing, normal blood pressure, muscle contraction, the transmission of nerve impulses, enzyme activation and the secretion of some hormones. The importance of calcium for preventing osteoporosis (literally, “porous bones”) is probably its most well-known role.
Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol):
Vitamin D3 is a fat soluble vitamin that is found in food and also the body can make vitamin D3 from exposure of the skin to sunlight. However, most people do not get enough sun. So vitamin D3 deficiency is very common, which contributes to bone loss and immune weakness. Vitamin D3 is an essential nutrient important for bone strength. Vitamin D3 in important for the absorption of calcium into the body. Vitamin D3 increase calcium absorption by as much as 30 to 80 percent. The major biologic function of vitamin D3 is to maintain normal blood levels of calcium and phosphorus. By promoting calcium absorption, vitamin D3 helps to form and maintain strong bones. The recommended U. S. “Daily Value” for vitamin D3 is 400LU.
Many published studies show that low calcium intake throughout life is associated with low bone mass and high fracture rates. National nutrition surveys have show that most people are not getting the calcium they need to grow and maintain healthy bones. To find out how much calcium we need, see the Recommended Calcium Intakes chart, below:
